While we have access to tremendous technologies and ever-expanding evidence-based interventions, prevention and behavioral health practices remain people-centered industries. Bringing your personal story into your work and leading from a core understanding of your "why" builds trust, which in turn fosters mobilization. When we’re authentic, others can’t help but respond.
Media literacy is understanding the impact various forms have in our lives, one of those formats happens to be music - and its role in choice is profound. Harnessing its ever-presence will elevate your prevention efforts.
Music is all around us, and we hear it all the time, but do we really listen? Words and melodies are an instrumental part of our lives but do they influence choice, especially regarding substance use. For most people the discovery of music and how it fits into our personality begins during adolescents, but what if how we decipher song meaning has an impact on the rest of our lives? This life is a journey and not a destination. So, while our professions often measure success in outcomes, this presentation shows that nothing happens by mistake and this thing called prevention is as much about process. As a continuation of Music, Does it Move Our Choices, this presentation takes a more personal approach and shares how the audience can begin to understand the importance of their personal "why" as a compass for prevention work.

These workshops are designed to personalize the science of prevention; whether it's infusing your work with creativity, storytelling technique or reframing your community conversations.
This workshop explores the role of creativity in our lives, our coalition work, and our community. Through exploration of creative outlets like music, art, storytelling, photo-voice, podcasting and other sources, participants will have an opportunity to develop a project of interest and leave with a product they can take back to their coalition and community. What's your story? For most of us, we don't think we have an interesting story totell, let alone think of one that has impact and can make a difference. Believe it or not, your story is your most valuable possession, and somebody is waiting to hear you tell it. This workshop will help bring your story together. Why is this important to prevention work? To tell your story, is to tell the story of prevention, and make it real in others minds. (Keynote Available)
This workshop will help participants construct their own adaptive leadership model through storytelling and identify false beliefs that hinder progress;
fostering growth and adaptability to advance their own personal leadership. Participants will gain insight into how creative influences impact leadership understanding in four key areas: core beliefs, messaging, external influences, and permission to create. (Keynote Available)
Based on 6-conversations from Peter Block, this workshop helps participants become familiar with the work and begin to shift their ideas about leadership and community convening.
